Seminar on Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure Delivered by Prof. Dr. Ikuo Towhata at UET Lahore

The Civil Engineering Department arranged a seminar titled "Engineering Judgment on Risk of Repeated Slope Failure in Future after Gigantic Rainfall-induced Disaster in Izu Oshima Volcanic Island, Tokyo" on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025. The guest speaker for the event was Prof. Dr. Ikuo Towhata. He did his Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He has served at various universities and institutes, including the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok; the Public Works Research Institute, Japan; and the University of Tokyo. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He has a large number of honors/awards to his credit, awarded by different institutes and societies all over the globe.
 
Prof. Dr. Khalid Farooq and Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Khan welcomed the guest and presented him with a bouquet. The guest delivered a detailed presentation on the causes of the rainfall-induced landslides. He also described the effective future management strategies required for improved early warning systems and better monitoring of slopes during heavy rain. The presentation was followed by a detailed question and answer session.
 
CED Faculty members, guests from Canada, Japan, Europe, and a large number of students attended the seminar. In the end, Prof. Dr. Khalid Farooq and Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Khan presented a shield to the guest.
