The Department of Product and Industrial Design (PID) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, organized a hands-on workshop titled “Exploring Finishing Techniques in Furniture Design” under the course Design Integration – I. The event took place at the Wood & Ceramic Lab and was coordinated by Ms. Anum Shamshad, Assistant Professor, PID, UET.

 

The workshop was conducted by Ms. Sara Zaheer, a renowned DIY and Furniture Restoration Artist and UET alumna, celebrated for her expertise in reviving vintage furniture pieces with innovative finishing methods.

 

Students from the 2023 session actively participated in the session, which focused on the art and science of surface finishing in furniture design. Participants were introduced to essential techniques, including:

 

-Surface preparation and treatment

-Polishing, staining, and paint application methods

-Selecting finishes that enhance both durability and aesthetic appeal

Following the demonstration, students engaged in an interactive practice session, gaining hands-on experience in applying various finishing techniques and developing confidence in craftsmanship and material handling.

The Department extended heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Sara Zaheer for sharing her valuable expertise, and to the students for their enthusiasm, creativity, and active participation throughout the workshop.
